TRIADE were a Florence based trio who were together for only a short time around the release of their only album, 1973's "1998: La Storia di Sabazio." For decades the members of the band were unknown to the public as they were not fully credited on the album, only last names appeared as writing credits on the vinyl label. Years later and through hard work, RPI historian Augusto Croce and musician Enrico Rosa cracked the mystery and the story came out. Keyboardist Vincenzo Coccimiglio (who was only 18 at the time) met bass player Agostino "Tino" Nobile at a rock club. The two hit it off and each wrote one side of the material on the album. It took some time but they finally found a drummer good enough to handle what they wrote in Giorgio Sorano. Nobile was already a seasoned performer who played in NOI TRE, a band which had featured Franco Falsini of SENSATION'S FIX and Paolo Tofani of AREA fame. The band had a brief but exciting live period playing memorable shows in Milan and also supporting both BANCO and PFM. The album could be described as a cross between ELP and LE ORME, with the former's heavy classical influence and abundant keyboards, and the latter's acoustic guitar, drum sound, and melodic Italian flavored melody. Side one was an instrumental suite more similar to ELP or the RUSTICHELLI BORDINI project, side two favored some of the romantic vocals and acoustic touches that ORME often employed. Another nice touch to the sound was the use of cello which gave the side one suite an exquisite moody feeling. The album is somewhat refined and not overbearing like some keyboard-fests, with drumming that is pretty tight and comparable to ORME drumming. The band broke up shortly after the album's release fulfilling the ridiculously common, sad pattern of great classic-era RPI bands folding after one album for lack of support by the records companies. They deserve to be better known because this is a fine album that should please fans of classically influenced, keyboard-heavy prog without electric guitar.
