Emma Myldenberger have a unique sound, essentially acoustic, mixing various elements from authentic pagan folk to medieval and psych-progressive rock. The exact history behind this band is vague, admitting only a few indications. Their first album was probably released in 1978. Musical themes are closed to ancient music, ritualistic in nature. The instrumentation essentially refers to a nice orchestration made of guitars, oboe, ocarina, mandolin, crumhorn, hand percussions, with addition of a fragile female voice and an almost eastern-like exoticism. Their second album called "Tour de trance" is considered to be one of the most achieved psych-folk listening. A very ambitious effort made of high quality kraut-folk improvisations. After two releases the band formed the Radio Noisz Ensemble (Third Ear Band, Between similar musical experiences). Despite a productive career, Deodato will always be best-known for a 1972 hit record, his catchy adaptation of "Also Sprach Zarathurstra (Theme From 2001: A Space Odyssey)." He began his career playing in a popular local rock group as a teenager. At 17, he was asked to arrange for a recording session orchestra and, despite never having written a score before, the teenager succeeded at quickly learning what was necessary. Although Deodato spent time studying engineering, he eventually decided to make a career in music due to the popularity of his writing. After working in Brazil's studios, he moved to the United States in 1967. Deodato wrote for the American studios and was involved in the still fertile bossa nova movement. He wrote arrangements for Astrud Gilberto, contributed three charts to Wes Montgomery's Down Here on the Ground, and was soon working for major names in several fields including Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Frank Sinatra, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stanley Turrentine, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among others. With the release of Prelude in 1973 (his first solo album and the one that included the "Theme From 2001"), Deodato became a major name for a time. He recorded sets for CTI, MCA, and Warner Bros. through 1979, although the efforts tended to be over-arranged and none caught on as well as Prelude. Since that time, Deodato was mostly outside of jazz, working as a producer and arranger behind the scenes, including for Kool & the Gang during 1979-1983. In the mid 70's in Montreal existed a Hammond-driven prog rock quartet Incubus (there was also a US group of that name in those years) that could've been often compared to Emerson Lake & Palmer and haunted the scene from 70 to 74, but never released an album, although they had started on it (sessions took place in January 74 in Hérouville, France), when, they called it a day in late 74. So when three out of four original members reformed in 2007, they certainly weren't going to name themselves Incubus, since the name had been used once more, by a metal group whose fame belittled both previous groups. So while wanting to refer to their early 70's heritage, they chose to rename themselves ExCubus. ProgQuebec approached them about the session tapes of 74 and once through them, they selected 4 songs that they saw fit to release. The rest of the tracks present on this first album are the work the group (now a quintet) to rekindle the flame of their gone-by dreams. So Mémoires Incubussienes includes both the historic session and another recent one (January 2007) and the least we can say is that the latter one is definitely worth or the former, the former having no valid reasons for not seeing the light of day, except for the lack of luck and group quitting. The first four tracks develops a symphonic rock ala ELP, but with a solid guitar player answering the local Emerson. Actually the group might also sound between Atomic Rooster, Egg and even Anglagard. Of these track, the most interesting is Abomination D'Une Quarte De Triton, which is clever but complicated musical trick removing some triton quart (or whatever, you figure it out), seconded mello- fest of (Morning) Glass Army Parade. If the first track had some wordless vocals, the other three tracks are instrumentals, but something tells me, that this was probably not intentional back then.. that the session had stopped before they could have added the vocalsAs for the 2007 sessions, they sound like a very credible retro-prog, sometimes close to the Scandinavian school that should have all progheads climbing up the curtains in gleeful joy, three of them sung in English with Tales Of The Tree not being a tale. Clearly meant as the second era's centerpiece is the 9-minutes Pendergast, comes with the full dramatics and a great outro. The closing Child's Funeral is a fitting goodbye with full choirs in the last seconds. All four tracks appear to have been written back in the 70's if I judge by the booklet. EL RITUAL is well crafted progressive/psych bluesy rock with nice organ, some Tull like flute here and there, nice guitars, with softer and harder rock/prog/bluesrock passages, sometimes with rather hard rock vocals, and a few times Uriah Heep-lkind of vocal harmonies, with lyrics in English. The fourth track, “Satanas” is more experimental, theatrical track mixed with bluesy rock, and a long drum solo, a song about being the devil. “Muerto E Ido” has a slight Canterbury touch. This deserves to be heard by all prog/psych collectors. It sounds as interesting as many English & American examples. One of those obscure lost privately produced relics from the early-1970's, and not surprisingly so with such an odd name! Ejwuusl Wessahqqan (a character from a sci-fi novel apparently) existed on the Munich scene for several years before they plucked up the courage to release an album. By the mid-1970's however, there was little chance of a major label record contract, so they decided to produce the record themselves, which was a mixed blessing in that they could do whatever music they liked, but it also meant that the recording quality wasn't up to professional standards. The band make a point of the fact that they were friends of Amon Düül II, though really the Ejwuusl Wessahqqan sound relates much closer to Egg (or even more so Arzachel) and Xhol, with their blending of trippy psychedelic space-rock, fusion and classical musics. Elsewhere influences from Embryo can be felt, and because of the raw edge to some of it, there are also hints of industrial music akin to German Oak or early Kraftwerk. One of the first Swedish bands to fuse jazz and rock (and occasionally African and Latin-American music as well) was Egba (photo: Pawel Lucki), led by trumpeter Ulf Adåker (b. 1945) and saxophonist Ulf Andersson (b. 1940), two musicians with roots in the jazz of the 1960s. Several other musicians of that era also expanded their vocabulary to include the electronic sounds of the day, collaborating with younger musicians whose background was mainly in rock. One of the latter is pianist and keyboard-player Harald Svensson (b. 1954), who has also been involved in other groups, most notably Entra. Tenor saxophonist Ove Johansson (b. 1936) and keyboard-player Susanna Lindeborg (b. 1952) in the group Mwendo Dawa have combined acoustic instruments with electronic sounds since the 1970s, and there are several other groups which work with fusion types of jazz. Nice flute, electric and acoustic piano, and jazz-tone guitar runs all within the confines of tightly arranged compositions. Some African moves foreshadows what Archimedes Badkar would do on “Tre”. Long track on the backside contains a funk rave-up with fiery solos from sax, guitar and electric piano. Ernst Schultz, guitarist and vocalist of Ihre Kinder, made his first solo album in 1971. His album Paranoia Picknick was closer to the electric folk-rock with lyrics about political issues. The musical material of the album was diverse. In addition to the folk-rock material there also are successful experiments with sitar and tapes played at different speeds "Synthetischer Orient nr. 1" ; strange sound collage "Paranoia Picknick"; and "" 10 Finger Blind ", performed by two typewriters. Energit was founded in 1972 from the ashes of Flamengo, wherefrom two members originate: Ivan Khunt (vocals) and Jaroslav "Erno" Sedivý (drums). Completing the core lineup was Lubos Andrst (Framus 5, Jazz Q) and Vladimír Padrunek (Jazz Q). Soon after its inception, the band was banned from playing live. At this time they were playing hard rock similar to Flamengo, with (supposedly) provocative lyrics; for a time in 1974 even Vladimír Misík of Flamengo fame sang for them. They were under pressure from the government, resulting in the emigration of Sedivý and Khunt. After that Lubos Andrst took over the band, and recruited mostly jazz-oriented musicians over the years, most notably Emil Viklický on keyboards, whose presence graced the excellent self-titled debut LP in 1975. In 1976 they released an E.P. and made an appearance on "Jazzrock Workshop 2" compilation. A further LP was released in 1978 (this time more funk-oriented), after which the band disappeared into obscurity. Recently they have been reformed by Andrst, Kulhánek, Sedivý and Honza Holecek, and gig around Czech Republic. A trio from Palermo, one of the few important bands to come from Sicily, Era di Acquario's debut was with a single, Geraldine having a rather hard sound with a strong bass to the fore. The group had a three-piece line-up, with guitar, bass and drums in the same style as many important foreign power trios. This band is formed by Michele Seffer (voice, guitar, bass), Angelo Giordano (that replaces Gianni Garofalo at flute, sax and voice) and Pippo Cataldo (drums, percussions, voice). Their album, issued in 1973, despite the title Antologia was not a compilation of already issued tracks (bar two songs that had already appeared on single). The album can be disappointing for the prog fans as it's mainly based on acoustic guitar and flute creating soft atmospheres. It's likely that the album was recorded and played by Seffer alone, as demonstrated by his picture being the only one on the back cover. The 10 tracks are short and the only exceptions to the band's style are the faster Padre mio and the already mentioned Geraldine, with a rockier sound and New Trolls-like falsetto vocals. A very active live band, which took part in many important festivals, Era di Acquario had a second album ready to release, with a new four-piece line up, when their first came out, but this never appeared. The line-up included, along with Seffer and Giordano, drummer Claudio Agostini and bass players Lino Chiappetta and later Claudio Rego. Now relocated to Rome, Michele Seffer briefly played with Il Volo after their second album, and is credited as composer and arranger on some 70's singles by Alcatraz, Hansel & Gretel, I Teppisti dei Sogni and others, but it's unclear whether he was in these bands also as a musician or not. His presence in the group Babilonia (or Babylonia, as in one of their singles) is certain. He sadly died in 2006. The trumpet and flugelhorn player Dr. EDDIE HENDERSON (born in 1940 and also known in Mwandishi circles as Mganga) received his first casual trumpet lesson from Louis Armstrong when he was nine years old, then went on, as a teenager, to study at the San Francisco Conservatory of music and performed with their symphony orchestra.MILES DAVIS was a friend of the family (his step-father being Davis' doctor), and Henderson first met him in 1957. Davis, who was impressed, encouraged Henderson to pursue a career in music. He studied zoology, then became a medical doctor; however, during his years of residency he kept playing part-time. He continued to study trumpet, and play gigs, with mentors such as FREDDIE HUBBARD and LEE MORGAN.A week-long gig with HERBIE HANCOCK's Mwandishi band resulted in three years of Mwandishi work from 1970 to 1973. He also performed with MAX ROACH, ART BLAKEY, DEXTER GORDON, JOE HENDERSON, JACKIE McLEAN, ROY HAYNES, McCOY TYNER and many other jazz greats.Following his Hancock years, he worked a great deal with PHAROAH SANDERS, NORMAN CONNORS, and ART BLAKEY's Jazz Messengers. He continued his involvement with various Mwandishi players. His first album under his name, "Realization" was released in 1973 and is a Mwandishi album in musical essence, conceptualisation, and in terms of the musicians involved. There were a number of albums by different Mwandishi players that can be thought of as extensions of the Hancock Mwandishi trilogy, and this may well be, in my opinion, the greatest. Other Mwandishi artists who released albums that can be considered part of the Mwandishi concept include BENNIE MAUPIN ("Slow Traffic to the Right") and JULIAN PRIESTER (Love, Love). NORMAN CONNORS ("Love from the Sun") is often linked with these albums, and Mwandishi artist BUSTER WILLIAM's "Pinnacle" is one to get if interested in "Mwandishi".In 1974 he released "Inside Out", which is another essential Mwandishi extension. It is a more funk / groove driven album than its predecessor, but still has that very similar space-jazz sound. In 1975, Henderson released "Sunburst". He had moved from Capricorn Records to Blue Note.In 1976 he released "Heritage", which, while still spacey, shows more soul music qualities than former efforts. It seems he moved to a more Miles Davis sound, but it's more accessible, commercial-sounding than Davis' music at the time.1977 saw the release of "Comin' Through" which is a jazz-funk album with a soul and disco edge. The track "Prance On" was released as a single and became a hit on the billboard charts (it would not be his only hit).1978's "Mahal" features Herbie Hancock on keyboards and is a continuation of style from the previous album. His last 70's album ("Running to Your Love") would be more in the disco-funk realm. In 1990's he returned to his acoustic hard bop roots (see wikipedia), and continued to work as a psychiatrist. After Miles Davis died, who was one of Henderson's musical heroes and an important influence, Henderson recorded a Davis tribute album called "So What?" with the participation of other musicians touched by Davis. Eclection is the First and Only Album by the British Folk-Rock Band Eclection. The Band came to know each other when Michael Rosen saw Georg Hultgreen playing in Bayswater, a London area where there are big foreigner communities. Together they decided to start a project and contacted Trevor Lucas (who would later play in Fotheringay, ran by his Girlfriend Sandy Denny), who in turn brought in Kerrilee Male. Joni Mitchell who, at the time, was playing the Folk Circuit in England, gave them the name Eclection, referencing the Eclectic nature of the Bands influences and style. The Band managed to contact Elektra Records (home of The Doors, The Incredible String Band and Phil Ochs, apart from Mitchell herself) owner, Jac Holzman, who immediately gave them a Record deal upon hearing them rehearse in London. The Album was released in August, 1968, and was not that well received (Holzman stated that it was due to them being in England). They played for a couple months before the first Members started leaving, and only in the end of 1969, would Lucasand his remaining comrades finally drop the project and chase other ambitions.Best Tracks - "Nevertheless", "Violet Dew", "Will Tomorrow Be The Same", "Still I Can See", "Another Time, Another Place", "St. George And The Dragon (Up The Night)" and "Confusion". This often overlooked Austrian band epitomizes the whole Austrian progressive movement. The prime mover is Hubert Bognermayr (keyboards and vocals) who later became known because of his pioneering with the Fairlight computer and his 'electronic hunter's lodge' (blessed by international musicians and the famous Bob Moog). The other members were Hubert Schnauer (keyboards and flute), Harald Zuschader (keyboards, flute and guitar), Fritz Riedelberger (guitar, piano and vocals), Gerhard Englisch (bas and percussion) and Frank Hueber (drums and percussion). The band was founded in Linz in 1970, and recorded its first album entitled Eela Craig in 1971 with a circulation of 1,500. Critics compared this album with established bands such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer, King Crimson, Gentle Giant and Colosseum. The band had a few onstage performances with the Zürich Chamber Orchestra in 1972, which led to more performances in well known opera houses of Italy, Germany and Austria, uncommon venues for a rock band at the time. The band signed a contract with Virgin Records in 1975, to release a number of singles and albums, including the Christian concept album Missa Universalis, and a signature ethereal style cover version of Chris de Burgh's A Spaceman Came Travelling, both released in 1978. The band also released "Virgin Oiland" ('80), "Hit or Miss" ('88) and "Symphonic Rock". The melodic and harmonic music from EELA CRAIG is build upon beautiful interplay between four members with their keyboards and sensitive and howling electric guitarplay. The moving compositions sound warm and are coloured with lots of instruments, from the aforementioned keyboards to flute, acoustic guitar and assorted percussion. EPIDAURUS were a mid seventies German progressive outfit formed around 1976. Their first album showed that they were firmly rooted in the early 70's progressive style of YES, PINK FLOYD and fellow German rockers, ELOY. This album were Symphonic rock at its best, with mellotron, lots of keyboards and a beautiful female voice. "Earthly Paradise" is a classic prog album, serving a mellifluous mélange of melodic Mellotron and Moog. This debut album enjoys a lost-gem minor classic reputation and it is little wonder why, because this album represents a bit the later 70′s German take-over of symphonic rock, once most of the English bands had completely run out of steam. This quintet (two keyboards, no guitar plus a female singer) was taking much of the old recipes, and using what seemed outmoded instruments, but this is one of the ingredients most progheads will like. The album is clearly presented in two phases/styles: the first side presenting a solid symphonic rock that is reminiscent of Genesis or Yes, while the second side clearly ogles in the Symphonic-era of Tangerine Dream. Both sides of the album have a different drummers, but share the same relative weakness in the songwriting department. Without a question this album is a 70′s analog vintage keyboardist wet dream with tons of mellotron, mini-moog, Hammond and piano. This British quartet featured Martin Henderson (bass, vocals), Franc Holland (guitar, vocals), Robert Webb (keyboards, vocals) and Jode Leigh (percussion, vocals, bass). Garden Shed is the debut full-length studio album. The album was released in 1977 by Arista. The music on Garden Shed is influenced mainly by Genesis and Yes. Camel and a band like Greenslade also come to mind a couple of times but the two first mentioned acts are the dominant influences. You get clever keyboard and guitar playing, a tight rythm section and some great harmony vocals. The lead vocalist is good but he lacks that original touch that could have made the album really great. The musicianship on the album is absolutely brilliant though and that´s probably the band´s greatest asset because the material have a hard time escaping the clone tag. Clone or not, most of the tracks are of a very high quality. The strong opener Midnight Madness, Three Piece Suite and the 16:17 minute long closer Poisoned Youth particularly stand out. Euphoria was a short-lived band from 1968 to 1969, consisting of Roger Penney, Wendy Penney, Tom Pacheco, and Sharon Alexander. Roger and Wendy were a folk duo performing in Greenwich Village, using the names Roger Becket and Wendy Becket. Euphoria is generally regarded as a sunshine pop group. Initially, Roger and Wendy were approached by Tom and Sharon to form a band with the express purpose of procuring a recording deal. Roger and Wendy were to front the band as lead vocalists in the Folk Rock group, with Roger Penney on electric autoharp and keyboard, Wendy on bass guitar, Tom on guitar, and Sharon on percussion. They signed with Jerry Ross's Heritage Records, which was affiliated with MGM as distributor and promoter, and recorded one album entitled "Euphoria".
