Semiramis - Dedicato a Frazz 1973

Semiramis is one of the many "one-shot" bands of the 70's Italy. Their only album is one of my favorite albums of the 70's Italian art rock. Combining elements of Italian folk, heavy progressive passages (especially in the middle of the album), Baroque church music, jazz, classical, and a good dose of insanity. "Dedicato A Frazz" pounds every sense, challenges every synapse in a flurry of ideas. There are more symphonic, keyboard-led parts as well where SEMIRAMIS may sound closer YES, GENESIS or BANCO. Their first album was recorded in 1973 when only 16-year old.Semiramis was a teenagers five-piece from Rome mainly based on the guitar of Michele Zarrillo and twin keyboards of Giampiero Artegiani and Michele's brother Maurizio Zarrillo. The basic nucleus had been formed around 1970 by Maurizio Zarrillo and cousins Reddavide and Pulvano, all of them being 15-year old, and their first singer was Maurizio Macos (real name Macioce). In 1972 they were joined by Michele Zarrillo, younger brother of keyboardist Maurizio, that had previously played with I Piccoli Lord and considered a gifted guitarist. The name Semiramis was chosen, from a queen of Babylon, and the group even played at Rome historical Villa Pamphili festival in 1972, but original drummer Pulvano had to leave the musical career as he was the only one with a regular job.He was replaced by a long time friend of the group, Paolo Faenza, who took with him another keyboardist, Giampiero Artegiani, to enrich the group's sound.Released by Trident label the album, Dedicato a Frazz, had a nice gatefold cover designed by Gordon Faggetter, an English painter based in Rome and working with RCA. Complex rhythm changes and a good guitar/keyboards interplay are the main ingredients of this album, not perfectly produced but still regarded by many as one of the top Italian prog LP's.The band had an intense live activity in most of the major open-air festivals of the time, and kept playing even after the album release until 1974, with a few line-up changes, preparing a never released second album.

Canarios - Ciclos 1974

Los Canarios was a Spanish symphonic band which made two studio record and one live record. This is their second and last studio album and this was made in 1974. On this time the group made up by - Alain Richard (drums, percussion), Antonio Garcia de Diego (guitar, acoustic guitar, vibraphone, voice), Mathias Sanvellian (electric piano, Hammond, acoustic piano, violin), Christian Mellies (bass, synthesizer), Alfredo Carrion (choral arrangement and conducting), Teddy Bautista (keyboards, synthesizers, voice) and Rudmini Sukmawati ( voice). This is a long lasting record with an amazing cover which shows a butterfly with a beardy man's head including the world. It's totally amazing and exactly how pretentious and flamboyant prog should be. Los Canarios mixed every good elements they could find and did a musical treasure box. A lot of the inspiration here came from Vivaldi's "The four Seasons" and this record has four side-long pieces: "Primera Transmigración", "Segunda Transmigración", "Tercera Transmigración" and "Cuarta Transmigración". It is hard to explain this music. Sometimes it is symphonic as Yes, ELP or sometimes even more, like real symhphonic and sometimes it's so crazy that RIO would have been a good definition. On the other hand sometimes the similarities with eclectic music like King Crimson are distinct and sometimes they are so progressive they are outside the progressive world. This band shows great electric guitar and concerto piano. The third track begins with Spanish guitar and Spanish vocals and in the end there is a church choir.

England - Garden Shed 1977

This British quartet featured Martin Henderson (bass, vocals), Franc Holland (guitar, vocals), Robert Webb (keyboards, vocals) and Jode Leigh (percussion, vocals, bass). Garden Shed is the debut full-length studio album.  The album was released in 1977 by Arista. The music on Garden Shed is influenced mainly by Genesis and Yes. Camel and a band like Greenslade also come to mind a couple of times but the two first mentioned acts are the dominant influences. You get clever keyboard and guitar playing, a tight rythm section and some great harmony vocals. The lead vocalist is good but he lacks that original touch that could have made the album really great. The musicianship on the album is absolutely brilliant though and that´s probably the band´s greatest asset because the material have a hard time escaping the clone tag. Clone or not, most of the tracks are of a very high quality. The strong opener Midnight Madness, Three Piece Suite and the 16:17 minute long closer Poisoned Youth particularly stand out.

Seventh Wave - Psi-Fi 1975

Formed by Kieran O'Connor and Ken Elliott after the dissolution of the British progressive band Second Hand, Seventh Wave is an early example of a synth duo, a pop configuration that was to loom large in the 1980s. They released two albums in quick succession in the mid-70s, on which they showed a certain instrumental fecundity. Elliott's tools were a veritable catalogue of 70s synth technology (ARP, clavinet, Moog, Crumar strings, Mellotron), while O'Connor showed a distinct orchestral bent in his array of perucssion instruments. The debut  album "Things To Come"consists of mainly synth-laden instrumental tracks with only four vocal songs The album received a considerable degree of air play in the USA but the band chose not to tour there to support it, which ultimately resulted in poor sales. Not wishing to make the same mistake twice, they embarked upon a US tour in support of their more song-based second album, "Psi-Fi". A leap forward from their debut, this album shows the duo taking on extended song structures and a more varied and much improved vocal style. At times the material sounds like a precursor to the Buggles, as in the slick synths and harmonized vocals of the opening track, "Return to Foreverland." Their better material comes late in the album, though, with Elliot's writhing, serpentine sibilance in "Astral Animal," and the bubbling synth and Spanish percussion of the instrumental "El Tooto." The best is saved for last, with the closing epics "Camera Obscura" and "Star Palace of the Sombre Warrior." The latter's somber arrangement -- of synths, spoken word, and choir voices -- breaks unexpectedly into a lovely moment of grace, where there's nothing but a ticking clock and a music box.

Il Sistema - Il Viaggio Senza Andata 1992

This is a very important band in the history and development of Rock Progressivo Italiano which is often described as a quintessential band in the late 60`s - early 70`s Italian rock scene, IL SISTEMA gave birth to great and very important bands such as CELESTE and MUSEO ROSEMBACH. This band had a three year career, first as a four piece, then with the fifth member Leonardo Lagorio joining them in 1971, during this time they could not release anything, but some good recordings were finally issued for the first time in 1991 on the double LP Il Viaggio Senza Andata. They were led by the keyboards of Floriano Roggero and by the sax and flute of the future member of CELESTE Leonardo Lagorio. Classical influences are clear, especially in their good rendition of MUSSORGSKY's Una Notte Sul Monte Calvo, they also show some similarities with MUSEO ROSEMBACH. After some relevant live appearances, the band split in 1971, with guitarist Enzo Merogno and horn player Lagorio forming MUSEO ROSEMBACH, while Ciro Perrino went later to form CELESTE. Cleared by the Italian Prog Team due to their music and importance in the development of the Italian Prog Movement.

Trace - Birds 1974

Rick van der Linden's father was a piano player, so it was not a surprise that young Rick took piano-lessons. Later he started to learn playing the organ and finally he went to the Haarlem Conservatory. He played in many bands and nightclubs and was impressed by Brian AUGER and Keith EMERSON. Rick got worldwide recognition with the 'classic-rock formula' from EKSEPTION but he wanted his own band to show his keyboard pyrotechnics. He founded TRACE with bass player Jaap van Eik (CUBY AND THE BLIZZARDS, The MOTIONS, SOLUTION, LIVING BLUES) and drummer Pierre van der Linden (TEE SET, BRAINBOX, FOCUS), a real Dutch super group! Now he got the opportunity to work out his own ideas with keyboard-dominated symphonic rock. In '74 TRACE released their eponymous debut-album, in '75 their second entitled "Birds" (Ian Mosley had replaced Pierre van der Linden) and in '76 their third and final "Ladies". TRACE is a kind of Dutch equivalent to early ELP but Rick has a wider array of keyboards, including Hammond B3 organ, Hohner clavinet and pianet, ARP - and EMI synthesizers, harpsichord, Solina string-ensemble, Mellotron and church organ. He even used the sound of a bagpipe! The music is a treat for fans from bands like The NICE, ELP, TRIUMVIRAT and early LE ORME. Despite good albums, great concerts and worldwide recognition, Trace didn't work out the high expectations and the 'supertrio' dissolved in the late Seventies. Nowadays Jaap van Eik is chief-editor from the technical based music magazine Music Maker and Rick is after many years again on tour with a new EKSEPTION line-up, including a magnificent digital church organ and his wife on vocals. The first two albums "Trace" and "Birds" (released on CD with bonus tracks by Musea Records) deliver exciting, often sumptuous, keyboard driven symphonic rock: the mainly instrumental music is loaded with virtuosic keyboard runs, swirling Hammond organ and majestic Mellotron eruptions from wizard Rick van der Linden, supported by a powerful and propulsive rhythm-section. The tracks on "Birds" sound more elaborate and refined. The epic composition "King-bird" (featuring Jaap van Eik on electric guitar) showcases the hugh potential of TRACE: dazzling keyboard runs, many changes of climate and dynamic interplay.

Le Stelle di Mario Schifano - Dedicato a... 1967

Little known in the world until a few years ago, Dedicato a... is among the most wanted and expensive Italian album nowadays. Supported by the pop artist Mario Schifano (who was not a musician), in the same way that Andy Warhol acted with Velvet Underground, this band from Rome was created in 1967 and released their first and only album the same year. Bass player Crescentini, had briefly played before in the last incarnation of New Dada, a very popular garage-beat group. Housed in an incredible gatefold cover, painted by Schifano himself, the album contains a side-long improvised track on side 1, with the long title of Le ultime parole di Brandimarte, dall'Orlando Furioso, ospite Peter Hartman e fine (da ascoltare con TV accesa senza volume), a surreal title just like the track itself. Closer to avant-garde or contemporary music performances than to rock, the stunning track gives a good idea of what the group's music and live concerts were about. Side 2 is more conventional, with five short tracks with psych influences. The band only released another single, this time on CBS, before splitting. Keyboardist and singer Nello Marini tried a solo career with a commercial single, L'amore è il mio mestiere/Il mio amore per te (CBS 3800) issued in 1968, and later appeared on Venetian Power's LP. In 1993 he released a self-produced CD, entitled Artista with saxophonist Carlo Ponara.

Korni grupa - Korni grupa 1972

Having left INDEXI from Sarajevo, the keyboard player Kornelije KOVAC moved to Belgrade where he formed KORNI GRUPA in 1968. He was led by ambition to compose "progressive" music, but the Yugoslavian public of the time still demanded lighter music, so the band started recording radio-friendly pop hit-singles. After several personnel changes, the first important line-up consisted of Kornelije Kovac (keyboards), Bojan Hreljac (bass), Vladimir Furduj (drums), Josip Bocek (guitar) and Dado Topic (vocals). At this time they managed to record several lengthy progressive compositions while maintaining their high-profile as popular hit-makers. The hit-single of 1970 "Trla Baba Lan" was a huge success, even internationally when French singer's Dalida released its cover version. Topic left the band in 1971 when he founded another prog band in Zagreb - TIME. For a short time his replacement was a young singer from Sarajevo, Zdravko Colic, who soon dropped to pursue a successful solo career, becoming the biggest pop-star in Yugoslavia during the 1970s. The new vocalist soon became Zlatko Pejakovic and he led the final line-up of KORNI GRUPA which was to record three LP albums of prog rock prior to their break-up in 1974. The same year saw them appearing at the Eurosong Contest in Brighton, performing their hit "My Generation", while the winner was "Waterloo" by a Swedish quartet called ABBA. The style of KORNI GRUPA can be described as a cross between symphonic progressive rock and jazz fusion, not counting their pop singles discography. Of the Yugoslavian bands of the era, similar music style can be heard listening to INDEXI or TIME. The first album "Korni Grupa" was released in 1972 and appeared to be the 4th (fourth) LP record of rock music issued in Yugoslavia ever! It was quite a revolutionary step keeping in mind the ambitious musicianship showcased on this album. The music was close to jazz-fusion with virtuosity playing by Kovac, Bocek and Pejakovic. This is one of the most important records of the entire Yugoslavian rock catalogue! The second album "Not An Ordinary Life" was recorded in Italy in 1974 and targeted the international market. The band was renamed THE CORNELIANS and the lyrics were sung in English, but it sold poorly. More important was the lesser creativity than on the debut. Here the sound was closer to symphonic prog, mirroring influences from YES for instance, but it often sounded empty and pretentious. Disappointed by a lack of success, Kovac decided to disband KORNI GRUPA after the last concert in Novi Sad, in November 1974. The third album "Mrtvo More" was released post-humuous as the first Yugoslavian double LP. The first record contained parts of their farewell concert in Novi Sad, while the second record was a sort of "best of" collection of their pop singles. KORNI GRUPA briefly reunited in 1987, with Dado Topic as singer, for a one-off gig in Zagreb, together with INDEXI, TIME, YU GRUPA, Drago Mlinarec and R.M. Tocak. A double LP "Legende Yu Rocka" (Jugoton 1987) was soon released as a document and this concert was repeated in Belgrade the same year.

Stradaperta - Maida Vale 1979

This group was formed in Rome in 1974, with an unusual four-guitar line-up and strong American-styled folk and country musical roots. A sixth member of the group, Gianni Dearca, was their sound engineer and lyricist. With the early line-up they played at the 4th Festival d'Avanguardia e Nuove Tendenze, held in Rome, Villa Borghese in June, winning the "best new group" poll. In September of the same year they also played the seminal Rome Villa Pamphili Pop Festival.A popular concert group, they only appeared on the 1975 Trianon 75 live compilation playing on their own and as Antonello Venditti backing band, and didn't have the chance to record a studio album until the end of the 70's, when their Maida Vale debut LP appeared on Philips.A good melodic album, this is by no means a progressive LP, being close to country rock in some parts. It contains eight songs, that despite their melodic inspiration are often long and with elaborated instrumental parts. The music is mainly built on acoustic guitars, but there is help by guest musicians like Agostino Marangolo (on drums, from Flea and Goblin), keyboardist Danilo Rea and Claudio Pizzale on vibes, and very good electric guitar parts. The group kept playing during the years as Venditti's backing band in studio and on tour.A second album came in 1983, a four track Q-Disc (a mini-LP) on the It label, featuring former Cherry Five singer Tony Tartarini and guests keyboardist Sandro Centofanti (Buon Vecchio Charlie and Libra) and drummer Bruno Bergonzi; lighter in comparison with the first LP, this went unnoticed and the group disbanded.A retrospective CD including tracks from the albums along with unreleased recordings has been privately distributed by the band in late 2002, but it sadly didn't have a commercial release.

Fruupp - Future Legends 1973

Irish guitarist, singer and writer Vince McCusker had spent some months in London to find musicians for his musical ideas. Disappointed he returned to Belfast and recruted musicians to play his material: Miles McKee (lead vocals), Stephen Houston (keyboards/oboe), Peter Farrelly (bass/vocals) and Martin Foye (drums). They called themselves FRUUPP, the name is dreived from an Electroset Page, the band added an U and a P. FRUUPP signed a contract with Dawn Records and in '71 they released the debut album titled "Future Legends", in '74 followed by the "Seven Secrets" and "The Prince of Heaven's Eyes". The band was making real progress (good sales, succesfull gigs) but Stephen Houston left for religious reasons the band and was replaced by John Mason. In this line-up FRUUPP made their last but acclaimed LP "Modern Masquerades" ('74).The best introduction to the very distinctive sound of FRUUPP is the compilation CD "Songs for a Thought (Sequel Records, '92) featuring 14 tracks from their four albums. FRUUPP showcases a great maturity in writing, combining several styles and showing lots of instruments and changing atmospheres: classic with oboe, folky with acoustic guitars and symphonic with propulsive interplay between electric guitar and organ. This CD also includes the previously unreleased track On a clear day: an alternating piece with powerful electric guitarplay, tasteful keyboards and strong vocals. The best comparison to the unique FRUUPP sound is YES-rooted band like Druid and England but FRUUPP sounds more sophisticated and more colourful.

A Handful Of Pleasant Delites was originally released by Middle Earth in 1969 - the same label as Arcanum and Writing On The Wall - and featured an interesting blend of acoustic folk, baroque medleys, jazz improvisations and experimental music constantly shifting from pastoral atmospheres to urban neurosis.

Demetrio Stratos - Metrodora 1976

Demetrio Stratos was born in Alexandria. In 1962, he moved to Italy, where he enrolled in the Architecture Faculty at the Politecnico di Milano. In 1972, he founded the group Area, together with Giulio Capiozzo on drums: the original line-up included Victor Eduard Busnello, Giulio Capiozzo, Yan Patrick Erard Djivas, Patrizio Fariselli, Demetrio Stratos and Gianpaolo Tofam. Later, Busnello left the group and Djivas joined Premiata Forneria Marconi, and his place was taken by Ares Tavolazzi. He recorded with the group and together with Gianni Sassi, for his research work on the Cramps.Records label. In 1973, he took part in the eight Biennale in Paris. In 1974, he toured festivals in France, Portugal, Switzerland and Cuba. In Cuba he was invited by the Ministry of Culture to meet a delegation of musicians from Mongolia and to participate in discussion on vocal methods in the Far East. Stratos gradually became more and more deeply involved in the mysterious world of sounds, rewriting and extending up immense work on the importance of the voice in Eastern and Middle-Eastern civilizations. In Milan, he worked together with GianniEmilio Simonetti and Juan Hidalgo and Walter Marchetti, founders of the group Zaj, and in the context of the Fluxus experience, he became involved with John Cage's music. In 1974, he recorded Cage's "Mesostics" in a version for a solo voice and subsequently performed it at numerous festivals in front of large audiences of young people. In 1978, his international fame grew when he took part in concerts given at the Roundabout Theatre in New York. This was the time of "Event" with Merce Cunningham and the Dance Company performed under the artistic direction of Jasper Johns, Cage's musical contribution, with Andy Warhol's costume designs. His research into the field of phonetic and experimental poetry led to his freeing his voice every naturalistic restraint, restoring its depth and dimension. The result of this van be heard in the two recordings of his compositions "Metrodora" and "Cantare la Voce" where what sounds like an instrument is in fact his voice.Daniel Charles has described him as the person who decimated monody by the demultiplication of the acoustic spectrum: he achieved a diplophony which is triplophonic, even quadrophonic. His vocalisation became microorchestrations without any technological amplification.
He died in June 1979 at the New York Memorial Hospital. He was admitted the evening before a concert held on his behalf at the Milan Area. Over 100 musicians played in front of an audience of 100,000.
